Reading, Phonics and Spelling

The school uses the DfE recommended ‘Letters and Sounds’ as its phonics programme.  This is taught in EYFS and Key Stage 1 to help our children to develop their reading skills. More information and activities to help your child at home can be found here:

Letters and Sounds

Alongside a discrete phonics session which takes place every day, a love of reading is promoted though sharing and engaging with books through talking, drama and games. A range of book schemes, such as Oxford Reading Tree, are used to consolidate phonics and children take scheme and non-scheme books home to read and share with their family.

Our Phonics Leaflet is available with help and games.

In Year 2 and beyond, children are taught spellings outlined in the National Curriculum through daily teaching and activities. Spelling rules are sent home to be practised. Word lists for each year group and spelling rules can be found here.

All children’s books are regularly monitored to ensure children are choosing appropriate and challenging books. Children take home a school book and record the reading of this in a reading record. Children read to an adult in school during guided reading sessions (also known as ‘ERIC’ which stands for Everyone Reading In Class) and as appropriate on a one to one basis. A full range of reading genres are offered through engaging reading schemes and books. A class novel is read to the children on a daily basis during class story time. These books, by well-known authors, are chosen for their high quality and engaging texts and may or may not be linked to the thematic curriculum. Find out more about our recommended class texts and literacy teaching under Curriculum.
